Everyone goes through times in their lives when they hit rock bottom and all hope seems lost.

For some people, this might mean dealing with the storms of life or simply managing day to day stress.

Yet for others, rock bottom may include battling a mental health disorder or an addiction.

However, even when things feel hopeless, God always provides a lifeline and a way out. When the storm rages around us, God is our anchor and our One True North. As you seek His wisdom for guidance, these simple, yet practical tips will also help you learn to find your way once again.

What to Do When You Hit Rock Bottom

Hit your knees and turn to God

When you’re at your weakest and are desperate for help, God always walks by your side.  He knows your deepest hurts and the ache within, and His is faithful to provide comfort even in your darkest times.

God’s Word reminds us that we are never alone, but instead, He journeys with us no matter what we face. He alone is our hope and our deliverer.

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.

Psalm 107:6

The Lord offers refuge and a safe place to rest from the burdens of this life. Trust that He will bring you comfort and lavish His amazing grace upon you.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.”

Psalm 91:1-2

Trust that God is the ultimate redeemer and will bear your burdens.  He is faithful to restore lives and mend broken relationships.

He brought them out of the darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains.

Psalm 107:14

Seek wise counsel

After you’ve reached out to the Lord,  reaching out to wise counsel is another way to start dealing with things.

Often, just having someone to listen to how you’re feeling can lift a huge weight off your chest. You might have a friend or family member that you can trust who will listen and offer godly wisdom.

When the storms of life are too big to bear alone, don’t be afraid to speak to a pastor or Christian counselor. Be sure they are grounded in God’s truth and can offer you advice full of biblical truths.

Get Professional Help

There are some issues for which it’s best to get professional help. If you or a loved one are dealing with addiction, attending a Christian detox and rehab clinic gives you the space and the help that you need to confront and work through the issues.

Finding a Christian counselor or rehab clinic can help you heal spiritually as well and point you to Jesus throughout your treatment.  Connecting with God in a fresh way is a powerful tool for combating temptation when it arises.

Change Your Perspective

Yet sometimes, a fresh and godly perspective will help you navigate through the storms of life.

Praying through how you look at life and asking God to guide your path is the first step to renewing your mind in Him.

Seek Scriptures for truth and set your mind on Christ, not your problems.  Sometimes, reading a Christian book, memorizing Scripture, or even watching a Christian TED talk can focus your heart on the Lord and not your circumstances.

Focusing on Jesus’ sacrifice at the cross helps remind us that there is more to this life than meets the eye and keeps eternity in our heart.

No matter what mountain looms before you, remember, that there is nothing too big for our great God to handle! He is faithful and able to continue the good work He began in your life. Never give up on Him, friend!

How do you overcome when you’ve hit rock bottom?
